Fountain/Nymphaeum Structure in Agora

The fountain was discovered in the northeast corner of the Aizanoi agora courtyard through excavation works conducted in 2022. The diameter of the fountain is 5.23 meters. Based on the examinations, it is observed that only the foundation of the fountain is preserved. The foundation of the fountain consists of 9 marble blocks of different sizes. By examining the dowel holes and stone traces on these blocks, it can be understood how the structure of the fountain was elevated. On top of the fountain's foundation, there are 8 base blocks and 8 parapet blocks made of marble, arranged in sequence. The base blocks and parapets together form a pool. In the center of the pool, there is a channel through which water flows. A grand fountain structure placed on top of this channel pours water into the pool. On the north side of the fountain, there is a channel made of fired clay pipes through which excess water can be drained out.
